1. Chatpal, Kashmir: deep snow in an unhurried village
Chatpal sits in Anantnag district, about 90 km from Srinagar, and gets heavy snow from December to February over its pine forests, apple orchards and walnut groves. Few outside visitors make the trip, so the snow stays untouched and the village keeps its own pace.
- Best months: December to February.
- How to reach: Fly to Srinagar, then drive via Anantnag on NH44 (Anantnag is about 66 km from Srinagar). Book a local 4×4 for the last stretch, which is steep and can be slow after snowfall. By train, Jammu Tawi is the nearest major railhead, about 210 km from Anantnag. Winter flights into Srinagar can be cancelled by weather, so keep a spare day at both ends.
- Budget: ₹18,000-26,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, twin sharing. This covers a homestay or guesthouse with meals, a local 4×4 for the transfers and snow-day sightseeing, and a guide or pony for one snow walk. The vehicle is the largest cost, so a group of four splits it well.
- What to do: Walk or ride a pony through the snow-laden forests, explore the old wooden village lanes, and add a day in Pahalgam, which stays reachable in winter. Aru Valley and Chandanwari may not be reachable in peak snow.
- Heads-up: Village life here is conservative, so dress modestly and ask before photographing people. Services are basic and roads can close after heavy snowfall.
2. Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh: Kinnaur Kailash views without the crowds
Kalpa is a village about 7 km above Reckong Peo in Kinnaur, looking straight at the Kinnaur Kailash range. Snow mostly arrives after 15 December and is deepest in January and February, while the winter crowds that fill Manali and Shimla stay away.
- Best months: Mid-December to February.
- How to reach: Kalpa is about 595 km from Delhi by road via Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur and Karcham, so plan two days with a night in Shimla or Narkanda. Shimla’s Jubbarhatti airport is the nearest airport, roughly 220-235 km away. HRTC runs around 13 buses a day from Shimla to Reckong Peo, an overnight bus leaves Delhi’s Kashmere Gate for Reckong Peo, and a shared taxi covers the last 7 km to Kalpa.
- Budget: ₹8,000-15,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, using a typical Kinnaur spend of ₹1,500-4,000 per person per day. Homestays can start around ₹1,000-2,500 a night, and winter rates are lower than summer.
- What to do: Watch the Kinnaur Kailash peaks change colour at sunrise, walk the village lanes and temples, and take a day trip to Sangla if the road is clear.
- Heads-up: BRO and the PWD keep the road to Reckong Peo and Kalpa open most of the time, but a closure of a few hours to a full day is common in winter. If the Kalpa road is blocked, stay in Reckong Peo. The Chitkul road usually shuts from December to mid-March, so base yourself in Kalpa, not Sangla. Homestays often have limited heating and timed hot water. Indian nationals need no permit here.
3. Sissu, Himachal Pradesh: Lahaul’s snow village, open in winter
The 9.02 km Atal Tunnel keeps Lahaul reachable all winter, which puts Sissu about 33 km from Manali, roughly an hour’s drive. You get snow around the tunnel’s north portal, the Sissu waterfall and a village that is far quieter than Manali, especially if you stay the night.
- Best months: December to February.
- How to reach: Fly to Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali) or take an overnight Volvo from Delhi to Manali, which takes 12-16 hours. From Manali the drive runs via Solang and the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. Taxis are quoted at roughly ₹3,000-5,000 depending on the vehicle and whether you return the same day. No permit is needed for Sissu.
- Budget: ₹10,000-18,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, based in Manali with a Sissu day trip or night. One family-trip estimate from Delhi by Volvo put a 4-night plan at about ₹10,000 per adult and ₹5,000 per child, and winter rates plus a night in Sissu push it higher.
- What to do: Walk in the snow near the north portal, see the Sissu waterfall, and spend a very cold, very clear night in a homestay.
- Heads-up: Heavy snow can block the Manali approach to the tunnel, as it did in late January 2026, so travel in a 4×4 with chains. The road beyond Keylong towards Baralacha La stays closed in winter, and some homestays in Sissu and Keylong shut for the season, so confirm before you book. Because access is easy, Sissu gets day-trippers from Manali; a night here is what makes it feel offbeat.
4. Munsiyari, Uttarakhand: Himalayan peaks and Kumaon snow
Munsiyari sits at about 2,135 m in Pithoragarh district, looking across the Johar valley to the Panchachuli peaks. Winters are cold, with nights from about -5 °C, and snow is most likely from December to February, when the Khaliya Top slope turns into a ski run.
- Best months: December to February for snow; November and March are cold but clearer.
- How to reach: Delhi is about 552 km by road, so plan two days with a night in Almora or Pithoragarh. By train, Kathgodam is the railhead, about 275 km away, with shared jeeps and taxis onward. Pantnagar airport is roughly 250 km away; Naini Saini airport at Pithoragarh is listed 94 km away, so check that flights are running. The budget route is an overnight bus from Anand Vihar to Almora or Pithoragarh, then a shared jeep.
- Budget: ₹12,000-18,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, twin sharing, with a shared or private cab from Kathgodam and homestay meals. Buses and shared jeeps cost less but add time.
- What to do: Walk or ski on the Khaliya Top slope, visit Betulidhar viewpoint, and use Munsiyari as a base for the Milam and Ralam glacier treks in the right season.
- Heads-up: Roads near Kalamuni Top can close after heavy snow, so keep a spare day. The drive from Pithoragarh is about 130 km of mountain road, so avoid night driving.
5. Chopta, Uttarakhand: snow meadows on the Tungnath trail
Chopta is the meadow base for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek, and in winter it turns into a snowfield where temperatures can fall to -10 °C or lower. Winter trekking traffic is thin, so the trail feels quiet, and Ukhimath, 29 km away, is the winter seat of the Kedarnath deity.
- Best months: December to February, with January the surest for snow.
- How to reach: Chopta is about 450 km from Delhi, roughly 205 km from Rishikesh and 225 km from Haridwar. From Delhi to Haridwar or Rishikesh takes 5-6 hours by road, then the route runs via Devprayag, Srinagar (Garhwal), Rudraprayag, Ukhimath and Duggalbitta. Buses run to Rudraprayag and Ukhimath, with shared cabs onward. Dehradun’s Jolly Grant is the nearest airport. In peak winter, snow and black ice build up between Duggalbitta and Chopta, so use a 4×4 with chains past Ukhimath.
- Budget: ₹7,000-12,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, assuming a camp or homestay with meals and shared cabs from Ukhimath. A private winter 4×4 adds to this.
- What to do: Snow-walk towards Tungnath, camp in the meadows, and visit Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath.
- Heads-up: The Tungnath temple itself is typically closed for the winter, so go for the snow and the views. Stays are basic, a local guide and shoes with grip are essential on snow, and road conditions change daily.
6. Lava, West Bengal: mist, forest and the odd snowfall
Lava is a small hill village at about 2,200 m, 30-34 km from Kalimpong, and the gateway to Neora Valley National Park. It is one of the few places in West Bengal that can see winter snow, but snow here is occasional and light, so plan for frost, mist and clear Kanchenjunga mornings, and treat any snowfall as a bonus. January temperatures range from about -0.4 °C to 15 °C.
- Best months: December to February.
- How to reach: Fly to Bagdogra (about 118 km away) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP, about 102 km). Take a prepaid taxi to Kalimpong, around 75 km and 2.5 hours, then drive another 34 km, about 1.5 hours, to Lava. Shared jeeps run from Kalimpong. The Kalimpong-Lava road is rough in places, so allow extra time.
- Budget: ₹9,000-15,000( per person for 4 nights, twin sharing, with a prepaid taxi from Bagdogra or NJP and homestay meals. Kalimpong hotels offer discounts from December to February.
- What to do: Visit Lava Monastery, take the forest trails into Neora Valley, and drive out to Changey Falls, about 14 km away.
- Heads-up: Entry into Neora Valley National Park is regulated, so ask your host about permits before you go. Carry warm layers, because nights are cold even without snow.
7. Katao, Sikkim: North Sikkim’s deepest snow, beyond Lachung
Katao sits 26-28 km beyond Lachung at more than 13,000 ft, and it is one of the best places in Sikkim for deep snow and winter sports. It is sometimes described as near Gangtok, but it is roughly 145 km away by road, and you reach it through Lachung and Yumthang.
- Best months: December to February, with flexible dates because the roads are often restricted.
- How to reach: Fly to Bagdogra or take a train to NJP, then go by road to Gangtok, about 4.5 hours by shared taxi from NJP. Pakyong airport near Gangtok has occasional flights that weather often disrupts. From Gangtok it is 118-120 km to Lachung, 5-6 hours, with an overnight stay. Yumthang is a further 24-25 km, about an hour, and Katao another 26-28 km. North Sikkim is visited on a guided trip with a registered operator.
- Permits: Indian travellers need a North Sikkim permit, arranged through a registered operator in Gangtok one to two days before the trip. Katao needs an additional army permit. Sources name the permit type differently, so confirm with your operator.
- Budget: ₹15,000-25,000 per person for 4 nights, covering a night in Gangtok, two nights in Lachung, the permits and a shared vehicle through an operator.
- What to do: Walk in the snow at Yumthang and Katao, visit Lachung Monastery and soak in the Yumthang hot springs when roads allow.
- Heads-up: Snow closures and landslides are routine, and reports differ on how much of Yumthang stays open from December to March, so keep a spare day. ATMs are scarce in North Sikkim, so carry cash, and choose a Lachung hotel with a heater.
8. Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh: crisp, clear and quiet
Ziro has no snow, but winter brings cold, clear skies, harvested paddy fields and very few tourists. The valley is home to the Apatani people, whose rice-and-fish farming has put it on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list.
- Best months: November to February.
- Permit: Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh. You can apply for an e-ILP on the state government’s website or collect one from the Resident Commissioner’s offices in Guwahati, Delhi, Kolkata and other cities. Foreign tourists need a Protected Area Permit.
- How to reach: Ziro has no airport. The nearest are Lilabari (near North Lakhimpur, Assam) and Itanagar’s Donyi Polo airport, each roughly 100-120 km and 3.5-5 hours away, with Guwahati offering the most flights. By train, Naharlagun is about 90-100 km away, around 3 hours by shared taxi, and the overnight Donyi Polo Express runs from Guwahati. Shared Sumos run from Itanagar and North Lakhimpur.
- Budget: ₹12,000-18,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, twin sharing, including a private cab from the airport or station and homestay meals.
- What to do: Walk through Apatani villages and paddy fields, and take a day trip to Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, about 32 km away.
- Heads-up: ATMs in the valley work intermittently, so carry cash. Evenings are cold and it gets dark early, so plan outdoor time before about 4:30 pm.
9. Lambasingi, Andhra Pradesh: South India’s winter chill
Lambasingi, at about 1,025 m in the Eastern Ghats, is the coldest village in the south, with fog, coffee and pepper plantations and winter lows that often drop to a few degrees above freezing. Snow here is very rare: temperatures touched 0 °C in December 2018 and January 2019, but they do not go below zero every year, so go for the mist and the chill, not for snow.
- Best months: November to January.
- How to reach: Fly to Visakhapatnam, about 100-115 km away, then drive 4-5 hours. By train, reach Visakhapatnam or Anakapalle (about 72 km away) and continue by road. There are no direct buses to Lambasingi, but buses run between Visakhapatnam and Narsipatnam, where you can hire a local taxi.
- Budget: ₹6,000-12,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, twin sharing, using a state tourism (APTDC) cottage or a private homestay and a Visakhapatnam cab. It is the cheapest trip on this list.
- What to do: Watch the fog roll over the plantations, camp at the Thajangi reservoir, and visit Kothapally waterfall, about 27 km away.
- Heads-up: It is not empty on weekends. During one recent cold spell the APTDC manager reported over 50,000 weekend visitors, so go midweek. ATMs are limited, mobile signal is patchy, and fog can slow traffic on the ghat roads.
10. Dawki, Meghalaya: a glass-clear river in the dry season
Dawki is a border town on the Umngot river, whose water is so clear that boats seem to float on air, and the dry months from October to May are the best time to see it. Winter days are cool and pleasant, and the riverside camps at Shnongpdeng and Darrang add kayaking and cliff jumping.
- Best months: November to February, with the town open from October to May.
- How to reach: Dawki is about 80 km from Shillong via NH206, and roughly 170-210 km from Guwahati depending on the route. Fly or take a train to Guwahati, drive about 100 km (2.5-3 hours) to Shillong, then continue to Dawki; plan 5-6 hours in total. Shillong’s Umroi airport is closer but has limited flights. Shared taxis and private cabs run from Shillong and Jowai.
- Budget: ₹9,000-15,000 (Approx.) per person for 4 nights, twin sharing, with a Shillong hotel, one riverside camp night and a private cab for day trips.
- What to do: Take a boat ride on the Umngot, walk across the suspension bridge, kayak at Shnongpdeng, and add Mawlynnong village, about 30 km away.
- Heads-up: Dawki is open to visitors between 6 am and 6 pm, and it gets dark around 4:30-5 pm in winter, so start early. It is a border area, so carry photo ID.
Budget planner: where the money goes
The local vehicle is usually the biggest cost on these trips, because the last leg needs a private cab or 4×4, so sharing it among 3-4 people cuts your per-person cost the most. Use the ranges below to adjust the per-destination budgets above to your own style.
| Cost item | Budget | Comfort | Premium |
| Stay, per person per night (twin sharing) | ₹1,000-2,500 (homestay, camp) | ₹2,500-5,000 (mid-range hotel) | ₹6,000 and above (resort) |
| Meals, per person per day | ₹500-800 (homestay meals) | ₹800-1,500 | ₹1,500 and above |
| Local transport | Shared jeep or bus, ₹200-800 per leg | Private cab, ₹3,000-5,000 per day for the whole vehicle | 4×4 with driver, ₹4,500-7,000 per day |
These are indicative planning ranges for 2026-27, and they move with the date and season, so confirm current rates before you book. Rates are highest between about 24 December and 2 January.
How to cut the bill:
- Share the vehicle. A cab split four ways costs a quarter per person; ask for a 4-seater or a 6-seater with a group.
- Travel off-peak. Winter rates fall in Kinnaur and in Kalimpong from December to February, and midweek trips avoid the weekend crowds and prices.
- Get the quote in writing. Ask whether it includes driver allowance, parking, tolls, overnight charges and local sightseeing. A quote that leaves out local sightseeing can end up several thousand rupees higher on the ground.
- Book homestays directly. They are the cheapest and warmest option in most villages here.
- Carry cash. ATMs are scarce or unreliable in Ziro, Lambasingi and North Sikkim.
- Book the gateway early. Flights to Srinagar, Bagdogra and Guwahati and trains to Kathgodam and NJP sell out for the year-end window.
Permits, road closures and safety
Ziro and Katao need permits arranged before you travel, and most of the snow destinations can have a road closed for a day, so check road status on the morning you leave.
| Destination | Permit | Winter road risk | Check with |
| Chatpal | No tourist permit reported; confirm with your host | Snow can close roads; steep final stretch | Host or local driver |
| Kalpa | None for Indian nationals | Short closures common; Chitkul road shut from December to mid-March | Host, HRTC, Reckong Peo district office |
| Sissu | None | Snow can block the Manali approach to the Atal Tunnel | Host, Manali taxi union |
| Munsiyari | None | Closures near Kalamuni Top after heavy snow | Host |
| Chopta | None | Black ice between Duggalbitta and Chopta | Host, Ukhimath taxi stand |
| Lava | Neora Valley National Park entry is regulated | Rough road from Kalimpong | Host |
| Katao | North Sikkim permit through a registered operator, plus an additional army permit for Katao | Snow closures and landslides are routine | Operator in Gangtok |
| Ziro | Inner Line Permit (e-ILP) | Long drive from the plains, little weather risk | Arunachal e-ILP portal |
| Lambasingi | None | Fog on the ghat roads | Host, APTDC |
| Dawki | None; carry photo ID, entry 6 am-6 pm | None notable | Meghalaya Tourism |
Why Gurez Valley is not on this list. Some winter lists include it, but its only road crosses Razdan Pass at about 11,667 ft, which snow shuts in the first heavy fall, sometimes as early as November. One local operator calls the road dependable only from late May to September and does not recommend independent winter trips, and permit rules for Indian visitors are reported inconsistently. Plan Gurez for summer.
Safety basics that apply everywhere:
- Altitude: Katao is above 13,000 ft and Kalpa is near 2,900 m, so ascend gradually and rest on the first day.
- Driving: Avoid night driving on mountain roads and use 4×4 vehicles with snow chains in Chopta, Sissu, Kalpa and Katao.
- Connectivity: Download offline maps, share your route with someone, and expect patchy signal in Lambasingi, Chatpal and North Sikkim.
- Insurance: Buy travel insurance that covers weather cancellations and evacuation.
- Buffer days: Add one spare day to any snow itinerary.
Which one to pick
Choose by what you want from the trip, not just by the snow forecast.
| If you are | Best picks | Why |
| Seeing snow for the first time, short on time | Sissu, Chopta | Sissu is about an hour from Manali, and Chopta works as a 3-day trip from Delhi |
| A family with children or seniors | Dawki, Lambasingi, Lava | Moderate altitudes, short sightseeing drives and simple cottage or hotel bases |
| Couples or honeymooners | Chatpal, Kalpa, Lava | Homestays, mountain views and quiet evenings |
| Photographers | Munsiyari, Ziro, Kalpa | Panchachuli peaks, the Apatani paddy valley and Kinnaur Kailash at sunrise |
| Trekkers and adventure seekers | Chopta, Munsiyari, Katao | Snow treks, the Khaliya Top ski slope and North Sikkim winter sports |
| Travelling on under ₹10,000 | Chopta, Lambasingi | The two lowest-cost trips on this list |
| Wanting no snow and no crowds | Ziro, Dawki | Clear, cool days and very few visitors |
| A group or corporate offsite | Dawki (via Shillong), Sissu (via Manali), Lambasingi | Larger hotel stock in the base towns, and APTDC cottages at Lambasingi |
